I was enroute to my next duty station, in 1964 ... in the military. It's
almost like a dream, or an LSD trip - but I have never taken any drugs whatsoever. I was
traveling to my new assignment and came upon the Main Gate of an Air Force facility of
some type. Now keep in mind that this happened in 1964, so the details are a little
sketchy! My happening upon this AF Facility was not intentional, but purely accidental. I
drove to the gate, tried to enter, and was stopped by the Air Police. I said that I merely
wanted to go to the Snack-Bar and get something to eat. Well, I was escorted to a building
on the facility and questioned extensively - about what I was doing there. Seems like it
lasted about two or three hours, then escorted back to the Main Gate, and released. Never
did get anything to eat ... they said there wasn't anywhere to eat. I have thought about
that experience many times since then, and have come to believe that it was actually the
ground entrance to the test site (Area 51), even though, at that time, I knew nothing of
anything like that. I was a young kid (20 years old) on my way to his next base! To the
best of my knowledge, the sign said "Indian Springs .." or something! This was
in the middle of nowhere, in Nevada, traveling from Reno to George AFB, Victorville,
California. 7 April 2003 ... in the past 4 days, I have had casual conversations with three people that I work with, and all of them have been to Indian Springs Air Force Station. What a coincidence! One of them was working an an F-4 while he was there. 21 May 03 ... Personal experience I just recalled: In late '64 or early 65, while I was TDY to Edwards AFB from George AFB, I saw the X-15 under the wing of a B-52 that was taxiing out to take-off for a test. That was interesting. One night I saw the lights of an aircraft taking-off from out in the desert. It wasn't that far away, but it didn't make any noise (of course distance can eat up noise). Once it was airborne, it just climbed almost straight up, and accelerated out of sight. The Lockheed 'Skunk Works' was located out in that general direction ...
